Barisal-based art school Charukala Barisal celebrated the 103rd birth anniversary of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin through a day-long Zainul Utsab 2017 at Ashwini Kumar Hall in Barisal city on Friday.
Barisal education board chairman professor Zianul Huq inaugurated the festival on Friday morning. Deputy commissioner of Barisal Habibur Rahman was present at the programme as chief guest.
President of Barisal Sangskritik Sangathan Samannoy Parishad S M Iqbal and chief executive officer of Barisal City Corporation Wahiduzzaman, among others, were also present at the event.
The speakers spoke on life and works of Zainul Abedin, who played a pioneering role in setting up the Government Institute of Arts and Crafts (now Faculty of Fine Arts of DU) in 1948 in Dhaka of which he was the founding principal.
The day-long Zainul Utsab featured children’s art competition, handicrafts exhibition, cultural show, discussion and others. Besides, Charukala Barisal honoured artist Syed Enayet Hossain with Zainul Sanmanona on the occasion.
People from all walks of life thronged the Ashwini Kumar Hall premises and visited different make shift stalls displaying pottery and handicraft items. Young children, mostly students of Charukala Barisal, took part in the art competition and created paintings on diverse themes and subjects.
The event included a colourful cultural show where local artistes entertained the audience presenting folk songs and traditional performing art shows.
