FFA to honour 3 artists with Zainul memorial awards

Faculty of fine arts of Dhaka University will honour two local and an Indian artists with Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Memorial Awards marking the 103rd birth anniversary of Zainul Abedin today.
The faculty will honour veteran artist Mustafa Monwar, Rafiqun Nabi and Indian artist Sanat Kar with the award at the opening ceremony of day-long Zainul Mela at Bakultala of FFA.
Cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor will present the awards and inaugurate the fair, which will feature artworks and handicraft items made by students and teachers of FFA, cultural show, documentary screening and others.
‘We are going to honour three eminent artists with Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Memorial Awards in recognition of their immense contributions to the contemporary art scene’, said Professor Nisar Hossain, dean of faculty of fine arts of Dhaka University.
Mustafa Monwar, a renowned artist and art organiser, started his career as a lecturer at East Pakistan College of Arts and Crafts (now the faculty of fine arts of Dhaka University). He later joined Bangladesh Television. In his long and illustrious career, Monwar has also served as director general of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and managing director of Bangladesh Film Development Corporation.
Besides, he is also known for promoting puppet show.
Rafiqun Nabi, a widely popular artist and cartoonist, is one of the renowned contemporary artists of the country. Throughout his career, Nabi has created artworks in diverse genres like painting, drawing, print and cartoon.
His cartoon character Tokai, a poor street boy of Dhaka who exposes painful truths about current political and socio-economic situation of the country through satire, earned Nabi countrywide popularity.
Nabi has displayed his works in numerous solo and group shows at both home and abroad.
Artist Sanat Kar is an emeritus professor at Visva Bharati University, India and a renowned experimental artist. Kar, known mainly for his experiments in diverse mediums of prints, is also a reputed sculptor and painter.
