The Drug Administration on Tuesday fixed the prices of pacemaker and valve, as the lifesaving medical devices had been selling in the country for long without any regulation.
The price of a tissue valve was fixed at Tk 2.5 lakh while the prices of the mechanical heart valves would range from Tk 55,000 to Tk 1.55 lakh for different brands used in Bangladesh.
The Drug Administration fixed the price of a pacemaker ranging from Tk 65,000 to Tk 10 lakh for different brands.
The yearly demand of valve in Bangladesh is about 1,200-1,500 pieces and that of pacemaker is about 1,800 pieces.
The patients or their families had to bear exorbitant prices for valves and pacemakers as the suppliers often played with emotion and life in absence of government regulation, admitted Drug Administration officials.
From now on, the brand-specific price lists for valve and pacemaker have to be kept on display at all hospitals, Drug Administration director general Major General Mustafizur Rahman said at a press conference at his office on Tuesday.
He said that the prices were fixed for four brands of pacemaker and four brands of valve as those brands were being used in Bangladesh.
The brands are made in the United States and Germany.
Mustafizur said that as the prices were not regulated earlier, cardiologists suggested that the suppliers were charging high prices for pacemakers and valves in the country.
The Drug Administration fixed the prices upon consultation with the medical device sellers, importers and hospital authorities, he said.
Bangladesh Medical Device Importers Association president Gazi AK Shaheen told New Age that that the association agreed on fixing the prices.
‘But we expect that the prices will be reviewed after three months,’ he said.
Gazi said that the dollar prices often fluctuated and thus the costs of imported items varied.
Earlier on April 20, the Drug Administration fixed the prices of 26 brands of stents in a bid to regulate the prices and quality of the lifesaving medical device as the patients paid exorbitant prices of the device.
The stents now ranges in prices from Tk 10,000 to Tk 1.5 lakh.
There are about 2,000 types of medical devices used in Bangladesh and their prices and quality are not being regulated by any authority.
Only the prices of stent, eye contact lens, valve and pacemaker have so far been fixed by the Drug Administration.
The yearly market of medical device in Bangladesh is about Tk 20,000 crore, Drug Administration officials said.
