The prices of local variety of onions jumped to Tk 120 a kilogram in the city’s kitchen markets over the week ending Friday.
Traders said as India raised the export price of the spice recently, onion prices increased in Bangladesh as India is the major import source of onions for Bangladesh.
The wholesale prices of imported onions reached to Tk 75-80 a kg over the week and the items were retailing at Tk 85-95 a kg in the city markets on Friday.
The high prices of imported onions pushed the prices of its local variety as the stock of the local variety is near to an end, traders said.
The prices of local variety of onions increased by Tk 25-30 a kg over the week while the prices of imported onions rose by Tk 10-20 a kg in the period.
According to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh, the prices of local variety of onions in December this year increased by 206.67 per cent to Tk 120 a kg compared with that of Tk 35-40 a kg in the same month of last year.
The prices of imported onions rose by 209.09 per cent to Tk 90 a kg in December this year from Tk 25-30 a kg in the same month of last year.
The prices of vegetables remained stable in the city markets over the week.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 40-80 a kg, bitter gourds at Tk 50-60 a kg, bottle gourd at Tk 40-50 a piece, okra at Tk 60 a kg, papaya at Tk 25 a kg, cucumber at Tk 40-50 a kg and tomato at Tk 120-180 a kg.
Cauliflowers and cabbages weighing around 700 grams to 1 kg were retailing at Tk 30-35 a piece and Tk 30 a piece respectively on Friday.
Radish, beans and spinach were selling at Tk 20-30 a kg, Tk 50-60 a kg and Tk 70-80 a kg respectively on Friday.
The price of green chilli remained unchanged over the week and the item was selling at Tk 120 a kg on the day.
The price of garlic remained unchanged and the local variety was selling at Tk 80 a kg while garlic imported from China was retailing at Tk 90-100 a kg on Friday.
Potato was selling at Tk 20 a kg and newly harvested item was selling at Tk 30-40 a kg over the week.
The prices of ginger remained unchanged over the week and its local variety was retailing at Tk 100-120 a kg, while the imported variety was selling at Tk 160 a kg.
The price of egg decreased by Tk 2 a hali (four pieces) and the item was selling at Tk 26-32 a hali in the city markets over the week.
Broiler chicken price remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 120-130 a kg while locally-bred hens were selling at Tk 300-350 a kg on Friday.
The prices of fish remained unchanged over the week.
Rohita was selling at Tk 230-350 a kg, Katla at Tk 220-350 a kg, Pangas at Tk 120-260 a kg and Tilapia at Tk 120-160 a kg, depending on size and quality.
Beef was selling at Tk 500-520 a kg while mutton was selling at Tk 750-800 a kg in the city markets.
Fine quality packet salt was selling at Tk 40 a kg, while the refined one was retailing at Tk 28 a kg in the city markets.
A one-litre container of soya bean oil was selling at Tk 105-107, while a five-litre container at Tk 515-540 in the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.
Unpacked soya bean oil was selling at Tk 98 a kg, while palm oil was selling at Tk 85 a kg.
The prices of red lentil remained unchanged over the week. The local variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 130 a kg while the coarse variety of imported red lentil was retailing at Tk 80-90 a kg over the week.
The price of sugar remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 55-70 a kg in most of the city markets.
The prices of rice remained high in the city’s markets.
The coarse varieties of rice were selling at Tk 45-48 a kg on Friday.
BR-28 rice was retailing at Tk 53-60 a kg, while fine varieties of Miniket rice were selling at Tk 62-68 a kg on the day.
