The High Court Division on Thursday upheld death sentences of Tareq alias Zia and Shakhawat Hossain alias Jewel for killing Jasad Chhatra League leader Quamrul Islam Momin at Uttar Ibrahimpur in the capital on September 13, 2005.

The court also upheld life term imprisonment of six other convicts — Habibur Rahman Taj, Babu, Monir Howlader, Hasibul Haq alias Jony, Md Jafor, and Md Sharif Uddin — for killing Momin. Among them Habibur Rahman Taj and Babu are in jail and the remaining four are still absconding.

Another death convict Rafiqul Islam, the then officer-in-charge of Motijheel police station, was abated as he died during the pendency of his appeal.

A bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam announced the verdict while all the seven convicts remained absconding.

Earlier on July 20, 2011, Dhaka speedy trial tribunal-4 sentenced three accused including Rafiq to death, and jailed the five for life for killing Mominul, a college student, over previous enmity with the police official.

Momin was shot dead on his way to college over his family conflict with OC Rafiqul Islam over constructing a boundary wall at his (Momin) house at Uttar Ibrahimpur in Kafrul.
