A dawn-to-dusk general strike enforced by Rangamati district unit Juba League protesting at the killing of its Juraichari unit leader is going on in the district.
Due to the strike, all business establishments and educational institutions remained shut down since Thursday morning while public transports, including water vessels, were not plying.
Leaders and activists of Juba League were seen picketing at places in the district town and brought out processions in support of hartal since morning.
Additional police personnel have been deployed in the upazila to remain law and order situation under control.
On Tuesday night, Arbindu Chakma, general secretary of Juraichari upazila unit Juba League, the youth wing of ruling Awami League, was shot to death by unidentified miscreants at Mitingachhari Bazar.
Meanwhile, miscreants swooped on Jharna Chakma, vice-president of district Mahila Awami League and her family members in Biharpur area of the town early Wednesday, said district Juba League president and municipal mayor Akbar Hossain Chowdhury.
