Defending champions Abahani thrashed Team BJMC 4-1 in their Bangladesh Premier League match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Tuesday.
In the first match of the day, Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra held table-toppers Chittagong Abahani to a 2-2 draw at the same venue.
Nasiruddin Chowdhury, Sunday Chizoba, Emon Mahmud Babu and Emeka Darlington struck one goal apiece for Abahani while Eleta Kingsley pulled one goal back for BJMC.
With the win Abahani took their tally to 30 points – six points shy of leaders Chittagong Abahani, which played one match more. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club remained in the second place with 33 points.
Abahani went ahead in the 13th minute when Nasir headed home following a cross of Wali Faisal from the left flank before Sunday doubled the lead in the 33rd minute.
Playing one-to-one with Nabib Newaj Jibon, Sunday darted into the box and sent the ball into the far post past advancing BJMC keeper Arifuzzaman Hemel.
Kingsley reduced the margin in the 49th minute when his shot from 20 yards deflected off an Abahani defender to go into the net.
Emon Babu made it 3-1 in the 70th minute when his curving corner from left flag bounced into the back of the net. Darlington completed the rout in injury time with a header from the six-yard box.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Russell took the lead in the sixth minute thanks to Monayem Khan Raju before Chittagong Abahani levelled with a 43rd-minute strike of Haitian forward Leonel Preux.
Port city outfit took the lead in the 83rd minute when captain Zahid Hossain’s scored with a diving header but Haitian defender Francios Jacques secured one point for Russell with an equalizer soon.
