The president of a school unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling Awami League, was expelled from the organisation on Thursday, a day after he allegedly beat a teacher of his school under Nazirpur upazila in Pirojpur.
BCL’s Srirampur UZK High School unit president Shah Amanat Shanto, a Class-X student, and his associates assaulted Santosh Dewri, a teacher of his school, at the victim’s home at Sriramkathi Bandar under Nazirpur, locals said.
The news of the assault by the school unit BCL leader came only 10 days after the central BCL instructed all of its organising units across the country to form school committees at secondary schools.
Santosh, now undergoing treatment at Pirojpur General Hospital, alleged that Shanto and his associates assaulted him as he had rebuked him for his drug addiction.
He added that he had caught Shanto while copying during his Secondary School Certificate test examination few days ago.
BCL Nazirpur upazila unit president Tanvir Hassan Dalim said that they expelled Shanto, son of Sriramkathi union Awami League former president Ali Hyder Mridha, for breaching the organisational discipline.
He added that they had also dissolved the Srirampur UZK High School unit.
Nazirpur police officer-in-charge Habibur Rahman said that no complaint was lodged till Friday evening in connection with the assault on teacher.
Academicians and politicians have expressed worries over the BCL initiative to form committees at secondary schools as they feared that the committees could facilitate establishing a reign of terror in educational institutions and drag school students into the culture of muscle flexing, infighting, establishing supremacy, and partisan gains.
