Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution on Tuesday asked edible oil refineries for ensuring Vitamin-A fortification in bulk oil as per the BSTI standard and to mention the name of refinery on the drum.
‘The BSTI has collected samples of unpacked soya bean oil from the open market and found presence of Vitamin-A much lower than the standard. The refiners will have to market the bulk oil with proper fortification,’ Md Saiful Hasib, director general of BSTI, said in a
meeting with edible oil companies held at the office of the institute in the city.
He also asked the companies to comply with Package Commodities Rules-2007 saying that they have failed to identify the company which has been marketing bulk oil without proper fortification as refiners do not mention their names on the drums.
Saiful urged refiners for using food grade drum in marketing bulk oil instead of existing general standard.
Joint chief of industries ministry and project director of Fortification of Edible Oil in Bangladesh Mohammed Tasharuf Hossain Forhagy, BSTI director SM Ishaque Ali, and representatives from Bangladesh Edible Oil Ltd, Meghna Edible Oil Ltd, S Alam Super Edible Oil Ltd and TK group, among others spoke at the meeting.
