An evening master’s student of Dhaka University went on a hunger strike demanding the Central Student Union polls of the university within 16 December.
Walid Ashraf started the strike around 5:00pm on Saturday afternoon at the Memory Eternal premises in front of the Vice-Chancellor House of the university.
Talking to pressmen, Ashraf said he will continue fast unto death if the authorities concerned do not pay any heed to his demand.
On June 6, 1990 last DUCSU election was held.
He further said that as the high-court instructed to complete the Senate body within six months, it was university’s responsibility to hold the poll by this time.
Due to dysfunctional Dhaka University Central Students’ Union, which played vital role in all democratic movement of the country, there is an acute vacuum of leadership, he added.
Ashraf also said that he wants freedom of the students which was absent and they could not exercise their rights as the democratic environment of education was absent.
While approached, university proctor Golam Rabbani said he didn’t know anything about such kind of incident and if that was true they will take necessary steps.
Everyone has the rights to express their opinion and the university administration always alert to ensure democratic environment of the campus, he added.
Earlier on July 29, During the VC panel election, a group of students of the university who demanded DUCSU polls was engaged in scuffle with some teachers which sparked an outcry in social media platform.
