Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority on Tuesday urged the government to protect the River Karnaphuli from pollution and grabbers.
CWASA managing director AKM Fazlullah made the call at a press conference held at Chittagong Press Club on occasion of ‘CWASA Service month’ that began on November 12.
Fazlullah said, ‘The Karnaphuli needs to be protected from pollution and encroachment.’
‘We noticed that some industries are polluting the river by dumping toxic wastes. Also, some influential people are engaged in grabbing the river. It is alarming for Chittagong as the Karnaphuli is the sole river of the city,’ he added.
Fazlullah said they took different initiatives, including Karnaphuli water supply project (phase-2), Chittagong water supply improvement and sanitation project and Bhandaljuri water supply project.
He hoped that after the implementation of these projects, the city dwellers would no longer face water crisis.
A consumer, Masudul Hoque, at the programme alleged that he had to bribe officials to get services from CWASA.
In reply, the CWASA managing director assured that they would investigate the matter and actions would be taken.
CWASA board members Tapan Chakrabarty, Solaiman Alam Sheth, Abida Azad, Jafar Ahmed Sadeq were also present at the event among others.
Later, CWASA officials, workers and consumers brought out a procession from Chittagong Press Club.
