NBR collects Tk 1,201cr in 4 days from tax fair

The National Board of Revenue in four days of the ongoing weeklong income tax fair received record Tk 1,201 crore in income tax from 1.64 lakh taxpayers who paid the amount with filing their tax returns at the fair venues across the country.
A record 5.91 lakh people also visited the fair venues in the four days at eight divisional cities in Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal, Khulna, Rangpur, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Mymensingh, 56 districts and seven upazilas across the country.
The revenue board on Saturday, a weekly holiday, also witnessed a huge rush of taxpayers at the fair venues including the central one at the NBR’s under-construction headquarters at Agargaon in Dhaka.
On fourth day alone, the NBR got Tk 217 crore in income tax from 53,625 taxpayers while 1.94 lakh people received tax-related services.
On the fourth day of last year’s fair, 29,306 taxpayers paid Tk 205 crore in income tax with tax returns and another 1.56 lakh people visited the fair venues and received services.
In last year, the NBR received Tk 1,157 crore from 90,913 taxpayers in the first four days of the fair while 4.82 lakh visited the fair venues.
Experiencing the overwhelming crowds at different fair venues, the revenue board has extended the visiting hours of the fair at the Dhaka venue by five hours for taxpayers.
In the remaining three days of the fair, the Dhaka venue will remain open from 8:00am to 8:00pm, instead of earlier 10:00am-5:00pm, for taxpayers.
They said that the decision was taken to provide the taxpayers with services related to income tax payment smoothly as the tax officials were facing huge crowds at the fair venues mainly in Dhaka.
The NBR also requested the taxpayers to use Mirpur/Shyamoli Road from today as the Agargaon Road remains off-limits for security reasons for the 63th Conference of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association that begins at the South Plaza of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Complex today.
The seven-day fair began on November 1 at eight divisional cities. While four-day fair is being organised at 56 districts and two-day fair at 34 upazilas and one-day mobile fair is being arranged at 71 upazilas in any day from November 1-7.
Taxpayers are receiving various services including filing income tax returns, obtaining income tax ID card, electronic taxpayers’ identification number, user ID and password for filing tax returns online and paying tax at the fair venues.
Principal secretary at Prime Minister’s Office Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Financial Institutions Division senior secretary Eunusur Rahman, Economic Relations Division secretary Kazi Shofiqul Azam, Finance Division secretary-in-charge Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury, shipping ministry secretary-in-charge Abdus Samad visited, among others, the Dhaka fair venue on Saturday and received income tax ID cards.
