Minimum wage for workers of tea packaging Tk 7,080

The government has increased the minimum wages for the workers in tea packaging industry by 227 per cent to Tk 7,080 from Tk 2,160.
After nine years of the last wage board award in 2008, the labour ministry published a gazette notification last week setting the minimum wages for the workers and employees of the sector.
The government has categorised workers and employees of the tea packaging industry in five grades and proposed five per cent yearly increment of wages.
Earlier on July 20, the minimum wage board published a draft proposal of the minimum wages for the workers and employees seeking recommendations from the stakeholders.
In February this year, the government took the initiative to review wages for the workers in the tea packaging industry and appointed representatives from owners and workers to the Minimum Wage Board.
Before preparing the draft proposals, the board visited five packaging industries in Sre Mangal, Maulvibazar and Sylhet and collected information about the nature of job in the sector, living cost of the workers and prices of consumer products.
In the new wage structure, the minimum monthly wage for grade-5 workers have been set at Tk 7,080 that includes Tk 4,200 as basic pay, Tk 1,680 as house rent (40 per cent of the basic pay), Tk 700 as medical allowance and Tk 500 as travel allowance.
For grade-4 workers minimum wage was set at Tk 8,823 that includes Tk 5,443 as basic pay, 40 per cent of the basic as house rent, medical allowance of Tk 700 and travel allowance of Tk 500.
Grade-3 workers will get Tk 9,971 as monthly minimum wage that includes Tk 6,265 as basic pay, 40 per cent of the basic as house rent, medical allowance Tk 700 and travel allowance Tk 500.
Minimum monthly wage for grade-2 workers has been set at Tk 11,280 that includes Tk 7,200 as basic pay, 40 per cent of the basic as house rent, medical allowance Tk 700 and travel allowance Tk 500.
For the grade-1 workers, the government set Tk 13,800 as minimum monthly wage that includes Tk 9,000 as basic pay, 40 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk 700 as medical allowance and Tk 500 as travel allowance.
The government set gross minimum pay for the Grade-5 employees at Tk 8,130 with Tk 4,950 as basic pay while gross pay for the Grade-1 employees is Tk 18,000 with Tk 12,000 as basic pay.
It also set monthly gross pay for the apprentice workers and employees at Tk 5,000 and Tk 5,900 respectively.
