The fisheries department and district administration, during a drive on Monday, detained 50 fishermen for violating a 22-day seasonal ban on netting, trading and storing of hilsa.
Later, a mobile court, led by Lauhajang Upazila Nirbahi Officer Monir Hossain, sentenced each of the fishermen to seven days in jail on the charges.
The fisheries department officials, along with the district administration officials and river police, conducted a 10-hour long drive in the River Padma on Sunday night and arrested the fishermen in possession of 450 kgs of hilsa and two lakh metres of illegal current fishing nets.
