New Age correspondent in Chittagong, quoting Rapid Action Battalion official Squadron Leader Safaat Jamil Fahim in Chittagong, reported that a RAB patrol team asked two microbuses to stop on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Jorarganj at about 3:30am.
The microbuses, defying the signal, drove away and its riders opened fire on RAB members forcing RAB men to retaliate by firing, he claimed.
He said that the suspected miscreants managed to flee with a microbus but left the other one.
He said that they later recovered a body from the spot.
A 7.65mm pistol, four bullets, a magazine and 600 bottles of phensedyl and a microbus were also seized from the spot, he claimed.
He also claimed that the man died by receiving bullets fired by the miscreants.
In Habiganj, the suspected robber was killed and two police officers were injured in a ‘gunfight’ in Dwaragaon Tea Garden area.
Police arrested Madan, who was wanted by police on various charges, including charges of robbery, on Wednesday evening, said Babubal police officer-in-charge Mazharul Islam.
A police team went out to a drive with Madan to arrest his accomplices at about 3:30am on Thursday.
Sensing the presence of the police team, Madan’s accomplices opened fire on the law enforcers and forced them to retaliate.
According to the officer, Madan and two other police officers were left critically injured in a gunfight that ensued afterwards.
Madan was taken to Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, said the officer, adding that the injured — assistant sub-inspector Sohel Shah and constable Imran Molla — were also being treated at the hospital.
Later, Madan’s body was handed over to his relatives in the afternoon after a post-mortem examination.
