Eleven Fishermen sent to jail on Saturday for netting hilsa fish from Kalabadar, Kirtankhola and Arial Kha rivers in Barisal defying 22-day ban imposed since October 1 by fishery directorate.
Bimal Chandra Das, district fishery officer (Hilsa), said Directorate of Fisheries with the help of marine police and Coast Guard, detained 11 fishermen and seized eight thousand meter small-looped net, 40 kg hilsa from Friday night to Saturday early morning.
Then the arrestees placed before the mobile court led by executive magistrate Mozammel Haque Chowdhury and the court jailed each of fishermen to one month imprisonment for violating the fishery act and imposed ban, he added.
On the other hand, 157 fishermen jailed, 148 cases lodged, 12.96 lakhs meter thickly knitted current nets, 2.77 thousand kilograms hilsa, 2 fishing trawlers and 3 boats seized and Tk 3.4 lakhs realized as fine by operating 262 mobile courts under 536 drives by fishery department, upazila administration, law enforcers from October 1 to 6, said Azizul Haque, senior assistant director of divisional fishery department.
The drives to save mother hilsa would be continued for increasing Hilsa resources in the country, he added.
