Miss World Bangladesh 2017 Jannatul Nayeem has been stripped of her title as she took part in the beauty pageant hiding information regarding her marital status, a breach of rules which states to participate in the contest one has to be unmarried. Jessia Islam, first runner-up of the contest, has been crowned as the winner.
The organisers came up with the decision at a press conference held at a city hotel on Wednesday. The contest's judges and organisers, among others, were present at the event.
Following the announcement fashion designer Bibi Rassell, one of the contest's six judges, crowned Jessia, who will now represent Bangladesh at Miss World 2017 in China in November.
Lovello Miss World Bangladesh 2017 wrapped up on Friday at International Convention City, Bashundhara with Jannatul Nayeem crowed as the winner of the contest, organised by Antar Showbiz and Omicon Entertainment.
The beauty pageant was supposed to find the woman who would represent Bangladesh in the upcoming Miss World 2017 in China. However, it ended being an event embroiled in a hefty dose of controversy.
It was reported in the media that Jannatul was not the choice of the judges, who had allegedly picked Jessia Islam, first runner-up of the contest, as the winner. Later, rumours about Jannatul’s marital status ran rife saying that Jannatul was not a ‘Miss’ but a ‘Mrs’.
On Monday, a youtube clip and photos, showing Jannatul dressed as a bride during her marriage to a Chittagong businessman Mohammad Monzur Uddin surfaced in the media. But the marriage did not last more than two and a half months and the couple parted on June 11, 2013.
Speaking to the media, Jannatul claimed that she never got married but was engaged and she later called off the engagement.
However, on Wednesday Jannatul went live on Facebook and admitted of taking part in the beauty pageant by hiding information regarding her marital status.
With tears in her eyes, she said her father forced her to marry and she ended the marriage as she was only 16-year-old back then.
She later spoke to a private TV channel in this regard and said she will return her title if she is disqualified from Miss World Bangladesh.
