A teenage worker was killed after his co-worker pumped air through his rectum in a factory at Birkedar of Kahalu upazila in Bogra Friday.
The deceased was identified as Russell Miah, 19, son of Abdul Hannan of Mirpara of the upazila and a worker of ABC Tiles Factory at Birkedar.
Police arrested the accused, Rubel, 24, a co-worker.
This is the latest addition to the series of incidents of brutality perpetrated on children in the recent years.
The factory manager, Kamruzzaman, said Rubel inserted the pump nozzle into the rectum of Russell forcibly for what he said unknown reason at the factory about 7:00am.
The air filled his stomach, leaving him sick.
He was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to internal injuries around 2:305pm.
Co-workers detained Rubel and informed police who later arrested him.
The hospital deputy director, Nirmolendu Chowdhury, said the air pressure left Russell’s intestine and liver damaged.
Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui, officer-in-charge of Kahalu police, said Rubel in primary interrogation admitted to his crime.
A murder case would be filed, he said.
On August 31, 2016, an 11-year-old boy was pumped air through his rectum at Katasur of Mohammadpur in the capital.
On December 15, 2016, a 15-year-old spinning mill labour, Yamin of Narayanganj, was killed in the same way at his workplace, BR Spinning Mills, in Narayanganj.
On July 24, 2016, another 10-year-old boy, Sagar Barua, of Netrakona, was killed being pumped air into his body through the rectum at Rupganj in Narayanganj.
On December 28, 2016, a spinning mill worker, 20, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition as one of his co-workers pumped air into his body inserting a high-pressure air pump nozzle into the rectum at his workplace in Narayanganj.
On July 16, 2017, a 10-year-old boy was hospitalised after the co-workers at a feed processing mill, ACI Godrej Feed Mill in Bhadraghat, pumped air through his rectum in Sirajganj’s Kamarkhand.
On August 3, 2015, a teen, Rakib, in Khulna was killed by pumping air through his rectum by his former employer Sharif, a motor workshop owner, and his accomplice, as a punishment for changing workplace.
The killing of the 13-year-old sparked outrage all over the country.
The metropolitan sessions judge in Khulna handed death sentences to Sharif, owner of the motor workshop, Mintu and his employee for Rakib’s killing and sent the case record to the High Court for confirmation of the sentences.
The High Court on April 3, 2017, commuted the death sentence of Sharif and Mintu to life-terms for killing Rakib.
