The road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Friday said Manik Mia Avenue will be restricted for private cars on the first Friday of every month.
He also said that if the number of private cars cannot be controlled right now, there will no benefits from the new roads, said a press release issued by the World Car-Free Day 2017 observance committee.
The minister was inaugurating a function to observe the day as chief guest at Manik Mia Avenue.
This year for the second time, the government observed the day on the road’s north side, from 9:00am to 12:30pm, in Dhaka by stopping all vehicular movement.
The RTB ministry officials said meetings would be held with representatives from Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority and Dhaka Metropolitan Police to implement the decision to observe the no car day.
The function was attended, among others, by road transport and highways division secretary MAN Siddique, additional secretary Shafiqul Islam, DTCA acting executive director Zakir Hossain Majumder, Nirapad Sarak Chai chairman Ilias Kanchan, Work for a Better Bangladesh, Trust programme manager Maruf Hossain and UNDP Bangladesh country director Sudipto Mukerjee.
