The Hindus at Moghalhat union of Lalmonirhat Sadar have decided not to observe Durga Puja this year, as a local influential person has grabbed a piece of land of Moghlhat Sarbajanin Durga Mandir at village Karnopur.
Moghalhat Haribasor Sarbajanin Durga Temple Committee president Arjun Kumar Gupta said they made the decision on Saturday night.
He alleged that locally influential Mahfuzur Rahman, 30, son of Nader Ali of Karnopur, grabbed 11 decimal of land of the temple in 2015.
A total of 35 decimal of land was purchased in 1959 to establish the temple, he said.
Following the incident, the temple’s general secretary Prashanta Sen lodged a case with the sadar police against the land grabber.
Later, Mahfuz grabbed four more decimal of land of the temple.
The temple committee informed the matter to the union council chairman, Habibur Rhaman.
They also submitted a written complaint to the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police of Lalmonirhat on August 27.
Additional deputy commissioner (General) Rejaul Alam Sarkar said that the district administration asked the union council chairman to settle the issue.
District council chairman Matiar Rahman requested Mahfuz to settle the issue.
But all their efforts went in vein as the local administration and public representatives failed to solve the problem.
Finally, the Moghalhat Puja Udjapon Parishad has decided not to celebrate this year’s Durga Puja, protesting at the incident.
Lalmonirhat district Puja Udjapan Parishad general secretary Gopal Chandra condemned the incident of land grabbing of the temple and demanded the settlement of the problem as soon as possible.
