The government on Sunday started open market sale of coarse varieties of rice at the rate of Tk 30 per kg across the divisional towns in the awake of recent surge in price of the staple food.
The OMS price of rice doubled from the previous price at the rate of Tk 15 per kg but the price of atta remained unchanged at Tk 17 per kg.
Food minister Md Qamrul Islam told reporters that the OMS price of rice increased due to hike of market price of the item.
During the last OMS the market price of rice was Tk 30 a kg and now the price at Tk 45 a kg, he said.
According to the food ministry officials, under the OMS programme rice and atta would be sold at reduced prices at 806 spots across the country.
The OMS of rice and atta started at 109 spots in Dhaka city and the outlets witnessed huge rush of consumers.
According to statistics of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh, the prices of rice increased by Tk 8-10 a kg in last one week and fine varieties were selling at Tk 68 a kg while the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 54 a kg.
Meanwhile, reports from Barisal said OMS dealers did not withdraw rice till 2:00pm as the government provided unboiled rice for distribution. The dealers said people in Barisal region are not habituated to eat unboiled rice so they refrained from withdrawing the rice.
The regional food controller in Barisal Reza M Mohsin said they were carrying out government order. He said he would inform the resentment of dealers over unboiled rice.
