A farmer leader in Sylhet was badly tortured reportedly by the members of Rapid Action Battalion on Friday after he was picked up from near his house in Airport police station area earlier on the day.
Sujan Miah, joint convener of Sylhet district unit Bangladesh Krishak Sangram Samiti and joint secretary of Sylhet Rubber Sramik Sangha, was picked up by a RAB-9 team at about 4:00am near his house in Makharkhola in Sylhet town, family and neighbours said.
Locals spotted bloodstain behind Sujan’s house from where he was picked up.
Sujan, a popular leader of the local peasants, was now undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, but RAB was not allowing Sujan’s family members or fellow farmers to meet him at the hospital, the Samiti’s joint convener Jamal Miah told New Age on Friday evening.
No concerned RAB-9 official responded to New Age’s repeated query.
The Airport police station officer-in-charge Mosharraf Hossain said the police did not know about his detention.
He said Sujan Miah was wanted in 20 cases including extortion, robbery and murder, but Jamal Miah said Sujan was victim of conspiracy as powerful quarters were trying to eliminate him, as he has long been involved in land protection movement in the hilly districts.
