An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League, ruling Awami League-backed student organisation, was stabbed to death by his rival group activists in Sylhet on Wednesday following previous enmity over establishing supremacy in the area.
The deceased was identified as Zakaria Md Masum, 22, son of Mashuk Miah, of Kamalgar at Kalighat area in the city and an activist of a BCL faction known as Surma group, police said.
Locals said that Masum and his associates had beaten up Ali Ahmed Mahin, an activist of the rival group led by MC College unit BCL leader Titu Chowdhury, Tuesday night in the city’s Sobhanighat area.
As a sequel of Tuesday’s incident, Mahin and his group members launched an attack on Masum in front of the shrine of Syed Hatim Ali at Shibganj Bazar in the city around 3:00pm and stabbed him indiscriminately.
Later, locals rescued him from the spot and took Masum to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, police said.
The hospital deputy director Devaprada Roy confirmed New Age that the victim died before admitting him to the hospital due to excessive bleeding from his injuries.
BCL city unit president Abdul Basit Rumman told New Age that he was informed about the incident only several minutes ago. ‘I am yet to know the incident in details. So, making any comment in this regard is not possible for me right now,’ the BCL leader added.
Shah Paran police officer-in-charge (investigation) Anwarul Hossain told New Age that they sent the victim’s body to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
