Lawmakers to select religious, social establishments for development

The Executive Committee on National Economic Council on Wednesday approved a project aimed at spending Tk 665.61 crore for the development religious and social establishments across the country.
The project was approved at an ECNEC meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina at the planning commission.
Planning minister ANH Mustafa Kamal while briefing newsmen said local government division would develop the religious and social establishments like mosques, temples, pagodas, churches, graveyards, crematoriums and playgrounds.
The project has been taken up for implementation ahead of the general election slated for
next year.
The members of parliament would identify the establishments for development, Mustafa said.
The planning ministry officials said the MPs have been pressing for the project that could increase their popularity in their constituencies ahead of the coming election.
The MPs have been allocated certain amount of money with another project aimed at development of hat-bazars and local transport infrastructure, they said.
With the newly approved project titled ‘Universal Social Infrastructure Development’ the local government division would
develop, reconstruct and refurbish some 10,000 religious and social establishments.
Each of the Upazilas will receive Tk One crore for the development of the religious and social establishments.
A substantial amount or over Tk 100 crore would be kept aside as lumpsum allocation for the project.
The ECNEC also approved nine other projects including development of rural infrastructures in Sylhet and Comilla at a cost of Tk 2,150 crore,
rehabilitation of erosion-prone area of Swandip at a cost of Tk 197 crore and protection of some areas of Sirajganj district from river erosion at a cost of Tk 465 crore.
A project for supplying water and maintaining satiation in 23 Pourasavas also got ECNEC approval.
Cost of the project would be Tk 991 crore of which Tk 698 crore would come from the Islamic Development Bank as loan.
The ECNEC also approved construction of a multi-storied building in Gopalganj district at a cost Tk 98 crore and construction of homes for sweepers in Narayanganj district at a cost of Tk 99 crore.
