Left leaning lawyers on Sunday described the recent meeting between Chief Justice SK Sinha and ruling Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader regarding Appellate Division’s 16th Amendment verdict as ‘unprecedented incident’.
Democratic Lawyers Association of Bangladesh told a news conference held at the Supreme Court Bar Association’s auditorium that any judge meeting with an individual, who is a party in a case, was unprecedented.
DLAB urged the government to file a petition to get the observations made by the Appellate Division in its 16th Amendment verdict expunged if it felt aggrieved, instead of attacking the judiciary and the judges by holding domnostrations.
The left leaning lawyers said that the meeting between the Chief Justice and the AL general secretary created the impression among the people that the judiciary was under pressure from the government.
The incident, they said, tarnished the image of the judiciary.
The lawyers said that the meeting took place after the chief justice said in the courtroom that the judiciary would not fall in the trap of any political party.
