Eminent artist Murtaza Bashir was greeted on his 86th birth anniversary at a programme held at the Bangladesh Asiatic Society at Nimtoli in the capital city.
Cultural personality professor emeritus Anisuzzaman delivered a lecture titled ‘Murtaza Bashir: Manush o Shilpy’ at the programme, which was organised by Bangladesh Asiatic Society. The lecture was dedicated to the memory of Murtaza Bashir’s wife Amina Bashir, who died on May 13.
President and vice president of Bangladesh Asiatic Society respectively professor Amirul Islam Chowdhury and professor Sharif Uddin Ahmed, among others, also talked at the programme.
Anisuzzaman praised the use of colours and lines in Murtaza Bashir’s paintings. He spoke on Murtaza Bashir’s sketch works as well. ‘Murtaza Bashir’s sketches of Dr Muhammad Shahidullah, published at literary magazine Kali o Kalom, are simply amazing,’ said Anisuzzaman.
Murtaza Bashir started his career as an artist with woodcut and linocut works and later started doing watercolour paintings, said Anisuzzaman. ‘Afterwards he started doing oil paintings. Besides, he is also a capable printmaker and skilled in etching, aquatic and lithography techniques,’ Anisuzzaman added.
Murtaza Bashir has also contributed to Bangla literature. He has to his credit one collection of stories, five collections of poems and two novels. Some of his notable books are Kancher Pakhir Gaan, Tomakei Sudhu, Phire Esho Anusoya, Ultramarine and Mitar Songe Char Sindhya, among others, said Anisuzzaman.
Murtaza Bashir recalled his wife Amina Bashir on the occasion and said he has formed Amina Bashir Memorial Trust Fund in memory of his beloved late wife.
Minija Bashir, daughter of Murtaza Bashir, also recalled her mother at the programme.
Born on August 17, 1932, Murtaza Bashir is considered as one of the most prominent artists in the history of fine arts of the country. Some of his notable works
are Mudrar Bibartan (Evolution of Currency) at Bangladesh Bank building, Martyrs Tree at Rajshahi University, and many others. In his eventful career, Murtaza Bashir received numerous awards including Prix National in France, Ekushey Padak, Best Cover Design award, Sultan Padak and others.
