A two-day programme to celebrate the 698th death anniversary of Hazrat Shahjalal was begun on Saturday morning through setting up a new canopy over his shrine in Sylhet.
The programme would be ended with a concluding prayer session and distribution of food on early Sunday morning.
A mass congregation of the devotees would be held at the shrine premises after Magrib prayers on Saturday during the Urs, sources in the shrine governing committee said.
Hazrat Shahjalal died on 19 Jilqad in the year of 1346 of the Arabic calendar and a two-day annual Urs is taken place on 19th and 20th day of Jilqad in every year to celebrate his death anniversary, the sources said.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police have taken additional initiatives to ensure security of the visitors and contain law and order in and around the shrine in the city during the programme.
The SMP additional deputy commissioner Zedan Al Musa told New Age that 10 police check posts and 50 close circuit cameras have been installed around the shrine area side-by-side deploying additional number of law-enforcers to ensure overall security during the 2-day Urs.
‘Traffic movement on the streets adjacent to the shrine area has also been kept suspended to ease entrance in and going out of the shrine by the visitors and devotees of the saint,’ the police officer said.
