‘Declaring war against the higher court by the government’ over the recent Supreme Court verdict on the 16th amendment to the constitution would be boomerang for itself, Democratic Left Alliance said on Saturday.
‘The Supreme Court verdict declaring illegal the 16th amendment to the constitution is a milestone order of the court and it would help boost up the other constitutional bodies,’ said a press release signed by the alliance leader Akbar Khan.
It said that the alliance from its central working committee’s meeting termed the verdict a ‘milestone’ in the country’s verdict.
It also said that the meeting said that former chief justice and the current chairman of Bangladesh Law Commission ABM Khairul Haque’s remarks on the verdict was contradictory, out of jurisdiction and tantamount to contempt of court.
On Wednesday, Khairul Haque called the Appellate Division judges ‘immature’ for terming parliament and lawmakers dysfunctional and immature in the verdict scrapping the 16th amendment to the constitution that had empowered parliament to remove Supreme Court judges for misconduct or incapacity.
On Monday, the government policymakers resolved to speak out on the Appellate Division verdict scrapping the 16th amendment to the constitution and reinstating Supreme Judicial Council system for removal of Supreme Court judges.
