Customs intelligence personnel arrested a man along with 16.24 kilograms of gold at Baitul Mukarram Jewellery Market in the city Saturday evening.
‘We have arrested Rabiul Islam, 35, a resident of village Purba Boalkhali in Cox’s Bazar sadar upazila, in the evening along with 140 gold bars weighing 16.24 kilograms at Baitul Mukarram Jewellery Market,’ assistant director Md Shahiduzzaman of customs intelligence told the news agency.
Bangladesh Jewellery Samity assisted the customs intelligence to capture Rabiul who is believed to be a carrier and had gone to the market to sell the bars found in his possession. The estimated market value of the seized gold bars was Tk 8 crore, he added.
Two separate cases, one under Money Laundering Act and another under Customs Act, will be lodged with Paltan police station in this regard.
