Chittagong Abahani maintained their 100 per cent winning record in the new season of the Bangladesh Premier League when they defeated Sheikh Russell KC by 3-1 goals at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday.
Nigerian forward Afeez Olawale Oladipo scored a brace while Tawhidul Alam Sabuz struck the other goal for the port-city outfit, which picked up their fourth win of the league to retain their top position in the league.
They could be joined by Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club at the top of the table provided the latter win against Rahmatganj MFS today.
The defeat pushed last year’s runners-up Sheikh Russell to the seventh place with their previous collection of four points from a win and a draw.
Ctg Abahani took the lead in the 11th minute of the game when Oladipo headed the ball home after a corner from captain Zahid Hossain from the left side.
The port-city club conceded an own goal in the 52nd minute when their Nigerian defender Ndukaku Udoka Alison headed a back pass to keeper Ashraful Islam Rana only for the ball to slip out of grip to enter into the net.
Ctg Abahani restored their lead in the 73rd minute as Oladipo struck again from a header after defender Mansur Amin fed him with a nice pass from the right side.
Striker Sabuz extended Chittagong Abahani’s lead scoring one more goal in the 81st minute with a solo effort.
Receiving a pass from midfield, Sabuz went round an onrushing Russell keeper Ziaur Rahman to put the ball into the net, completing his fourth goal in as many matches – a rare feat by a local striker.
