Businessmen are importing onion from Pakistan and Egypt as an alternative option to meet the higher demand of the item ahead of the Eid festival after import of onion from India became costlier.

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed said that the businessmen could not import onion from India because of scarcity and price hike of onion due to flood there during a review meeting on essential commodities at the secretariat.

Now they are importing onion from Pakistan, Egypt and other countries to meet the local deficit of four lakh tonne of onion against the overall demand of 22 lakh tonne of onion, he said.

Tofail hoped that price of onion would fall when the imported onion reaches the country.

The price of onion has marked sharp rise in the local market to Tk 48-Tk 50 from Tk 30 a month ago.

The commerce minister said he has already asked the Chittagong port authority to smoothen the release of onion following urge from the business.
