Given the arrangement of farcical national elections in 2014, the ruling Awami League had lost people’s trust to hold a credible and participatory election, said Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna on Saturday.

Addressing a discussion organised by Bangladesh Jana Dal at National Press Club, he said that the government failed to ensure congenial atmosphere for an inclusive national elections scheduled to be held in 2019 as all the opposition forces were now rampantly suppressed by the autocratic regime.

Referring to recent comments by some ruling party leaders criticising the Supreme Court order on the 16th amendment of the constitution, Manna termed the AL leaders hypocrite as they defended 2014 elections under ‘elected representatives’ by showing constitutional directives and disregarded highest court’s justification at the same time.

Political leaders Abdul Malek Ratan, Shahidullah Kayser, Azizul Islam, Sheikh Abdun Noor, Akbar Khan, among others, addressed the discussion.
