The Counter Terrorism and Transitional Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Saturday said that suspects in July 1, 2016 Gulshan café attack were killed in an operation in Chapainawabganj in April.
Unit chief Monirul Islam, at a function at the metropolitan police headquarters on Saturday, said that the suspected extremists were identified as Basharuzzaman alias Chocolate and Mizanur Rahman alias Chhoto Mizan after the capture of their fellow Shohel Mahfuz recently.
Basharuzzaman was a fund collector for Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh faction while Mizan was one of the suppliers of grenades and firearms used in the Gulshan café attack, counter terrorism officials claimed.
The two were killed along with two others during a raid code-named Operation Eagle Hunt by police on a suspected den of extremists at Shibganj in Chapainawabganj on April 27.
The suspected extremists either blew themselves up or were shot dead during the 12-hour raid on the suspected den at a mango orchard.
At that time police only confirmed that Rafiqul Islam alias Abu, a JMB member, was among the dead.
Police learnt about the identities Basharuzzaman and Mizanur by interrogating suspected extremist Shohel Mahfuz, arrested in the same district on July 8.
The police would go for DNA profiling to formally identify them, Monirul said.
Basharuzzaman had been on the run since he evaded arrest on September 10, 2016 when law enforcers raided an Azimpur apartment in Dhaka. His wife Ferdousi Afrin was among the three women arrested there.
Basharuzzaman hailed from Rajshahi’s Tanore upazila. He passed SSC from a local school and HSC from Rajshahi New Government College. He later moved to Dhaka. He went missing six to eight months before the Gulshan cafe attack.
