Some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Sunday allegedly beat up a university reporter and a student on the Jagannath University campus for covering the infighting between two factions of the organisation’s university unit over submitting a university tender.
The injured were identified as online portal amadershomoy.com university correspondent Abdul Wahab, also a third-year student of mass commutation and journalism department, and Ariful Islam, a third-year student of history department of the university.
Witnesses said some Chhatra League men, followers of BCL JnU unit former organising secretary Tanvir Rahman Khan, Jahir Raihan Agun and publicity secretary Anisur Rahman Shishir, led by geography and environment science department student Sheikh Nadim, swooped on Abdul Wahab and Ariful Islam and left them seriously injured, when Wahab is taking photographs of their infighting at around 11:45am.
They also said that BCL men snatched away Wahab’s cell phone at that time.
Wahab and Ariful were both rushed to the university medical centre for primary treatment.
Later, Wahab was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for critical condition.
When approached, Tanvir Rahman Khan told New Age that their men were not involved in the clashes.
University proctor Noor Muhammad told New Age, ‘Effective steps will be taken if we get a written complaint regarding the matter.’
