A suspected robber was beaten to death by a mob at Ghatail in Tangail early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Biplab, 35, son of Mohir Uddin of Khulna.

Ghatail police officer-in-charge Kamal Hossain said a gang of robbers including Biplab was taking preparation to commit robbery on Sagardighi-Bharaduba road at Sholakura around 3:00am.

Locals, suspecting their movement, chased them, caught Biplab and gave him a good thrash.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot and took critically injured Biplab to Ghatail Upazila Health Complex where physicians declared him dead, the police officer-in-charge added.

Police arrested three more suspected robbers — Sumon Khan, 34, of Dhaka, Nahid Hossain, 20, of Kalihati in Tangail, and Delwar Hossain, 28, of Shahrasti in Chandpur — at Jordighi in Ghatail and Kachua in Sakhipur after the incident.

They also seized a microbus, a pick-up van and sharp weapons from them.

Dhalapara union parishad chairman Hekmat Shikder said the incident of lynching was the outburst of the locals’ frustration as incidents of robbery were rampant in the area for past several months.
