2 killed in ‘gunfights’ in Jessore, B’Baria

Two persons were shot dead in ‘gunfights’ in Jessore and Brahmanbaria on Monday after their arrests.
New Age correspondent in Jessore reported that 25-year-old Sabbir Hossain died on the way to a hospital after police had found him injured on Jessore–Narail Highway at Aiyapur under Bagharpara upazila in the district.
Police said Sabbir, son of Saidul Islam of Khalilpur village of Bagharpara, fled from police custody breaking handcuffs earlier on the day.
A police team found him wounded at about 2:45am on Monday following a ‘gunfight’ between two groups of drug dealers.
The team took him to Jessore General Hospital, but the on-duty doctor declared him dead, said Wahiduzzaman, inspector (investigation) of Bagharpara police station.
Some 107 bottles of contraband syrup were recovered from the spot, the police officer claimed.
Motiar Rahman, officer in-charge of Bagharpara police station, on Sunday told reporters that a police team raided the residence of Saidul Islam on Sunday and seized illegal drugs.
They arrested Iftekharuddin, 38, of Khulna town, Kausar Ahmed, 22, of Rajikanda area in Rajbari and Sabbir Hossain, 25, for their reported connection with drug dealing.
Police seized a pistol, five bullets, 910 bottles of Phensedyl, Tk 28,000 in cash, 6.5 kilograms of cannabis and a motorbike from them.
‘Of the arrested, Sabbir broke the handcuff and escaped from the police later,’ he said.
Noor Mohammad, an uncle of the deceased, said Sabbir was picked up from his residence on Sunday afternoon. ‘Later, the police claimed that he got away breaking his handcuff,’ he added.
In Brahmanbaria, the police said a suspected robber, Selim Mia, 32, son of Tazul Islam of Sadar upazila was killed in Sarail during a ‘gunfight’.
Selim, an accused in four cases, was caught by local people while he, along with his associates, was taking preparation to commit a robbery at Bertola village by Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at about 11:00pm on Sunday, said Rupok Kumer Saha, officer-in-charge of Sarail Police Station.
Local people handed him over to the police, confirmed Sarail police inspector (investigation) Kamruzzaman.
The police officer said they caught in a gunfight at about 1:45am when they went out with him to recover his firearms.
His associates carried out an attack on police to free Selim, triggering the gunfight that left him dead and five policemen injured, said Rupok Kumer. Two pipe guns and four spears were recovered from the spot.
Assistant sub-inspectors Farid and Karim, and constables Shahdat Hossain, Ashraful and Zahir were reportedly injured.
He said Selim died in the shot fired by his cohorts. The body was sent to district hospital for autopsy.
