Lawyers assault bench officer for ‘corruption’

Some lawyers on Monday attacked a bench officer at Bangladesh Supreme Court accusing him of taking money to ensure hearing schedule of their cases.

Rafiqul Islam, the bench officer of the bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury, has lodged a complaint with bench accusing five lawyers.

The bench issued a suo moto contempt rule asking the five lawyers—Noor E Alam Uzzal, Billal Hosen Lizen Patwary, Mahmud, Mati Lal Bapery and Mohammad Ali—to explain in 10 days why they would not be punished for committing the contempt of the court for their action.

The bench also summoned the five contemnors to appear before the court July 2 and ‘failing which they will be dealt with in accordance with law’.

In its order, the bench pointed out that some advocates were started hue and cry for which functions of the vacation bench were hindered on June 19.

Immediately after rising from the court, advocates  four on the dias, fell upon the bench officer Md. Rafiqul Islam,  inflicted  blows upon his head, and different parts of the body and vandalized the case records on the plea of their respective unlisted motions not being heard.

Rafiqul Islam denied the allegation of taking money from lawyers. ‘It is the judges who make the serial of hearing cases and I arrange them accordingly,’ he claimed.

The Supreme Court Bar Association president Zainul Abedin told New Age that attacking bench officer is no way acceptable.

‘The bar will take action against the accused,’ he said. Asked about the allegation of taking money by bench officers, he said such corrupt practice of bench officers and lawyers also unacceptable.
