Free cochlear implants were distributed on Sunday among hearing-impaired children under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University’s cochlear implants programme, said a press release.
Addressing the event at the university’s Shaheed Doctor Milan Hall, BSSMU vice-chancellor Kamrul Hasan Khan said that the programme had been a humanitarian effort undertaken by the university with the aim of helping children with hearing impairment. Kamrul added that it was due to the sincerity shown towards the cause by prime minister Sheikh Hasina that the programme, supported by the social welfare ministry, was able to provide many poor children with the disability with much required and expensive treatment.
A total of 72 children with the disability were provided with free implants worth Tk 7.2 crore at the event.
BSSMU pro-VC (research and development) Md Shahidullah Shikdar and pro-VC (administration) Md Sharfuddin Ahmed also attended the event as special guests.
The distribution session was presided over by BSMMU treasurer Mohammad Ali Asgar Morol, also chair of cochlear implants distribution committee.
