Two new prosecution witnesses on Sunday testified at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 in the crimes against humanity case against Riaj Uddin Fakir, 65, of Phulbaria upazila in Mymensingh.
‘Jolekha Khatun appeared as PW-5 and her nephew Md Khorshed Alam appeared as PW-6. Al Badr leader Fakir along with his men abducted and subsequently killed Jolekha’s husband and Alam’s father, who were brothers. The accused actually abducted four of them. He killed three and set the other free,’ said prosecutor Hrishikesh Saha.
After their depositions, defence counsels Syed Mizanur Rahman and Mujahidul Islam Shahin cross-examined the witnesses.
After that, the ICT-1 adjourned the hearing till July 11.
The tribunal in December 11, 2016, framed five charges of crimes against humanity against Fakir and Md Waz Uddin, 70.
The five charges are abduction, confinement, torture and murder of five; abduction, confinement, torture and murder of two and rape and murder of a woman; genocide at Rishipara; extermination, abduction, confinement and torture at Achhim Bazar, Bashdi and Bhalukjan; and murder of three brothers of village Bhalukjan.
But, later it was found that Waz Uddin actually died in May 7, 2016, but the local police had no clue whatsoever about this and failed to inform the tribunal about his death.
The ICT-1 on January 12, 2017, expressed its discontent over continuing trial proceedings against a deceased and asked the prosecution to investigate to find out the culprits behind the blunder.
According to the prosecution, Waz Uddin was an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami in 1971 and subsequently joined local Razakar Bahini when the war began.
