Popular writer Selina Hossain was felicitated on her 70th birthday at a programme organised by Bangiya Sahitya-Sangskriti Parishad, in association with Bangla Academy and Bangladesh Shishu Academy on Wednesday.
The programme, held at Bangla Academy, featured discussion and cultural show.
Emeritus professor Anisuzzaman, actor Syed Hasan Imam, artist Hashem Khan, poet Azizur Rahman Aziz and others spoke on the occasion highlighting Selina Hossain’s life and work.

The writer has authored over 40 novels, 15 collections of short stories, and 12 collections of essays and many children books. She is also chairperson of Bangladesh Shishu Academy.
Dhaka University’s Bangla department professor Bishwajit Ghosh in his felicitation remarks evaluated Selina Hossain as one of the most influential novelists in contemporary Bangla literature.
‘In Selina Hossain’s novels, themes like class struggles, tradition, history and women have been treated with brilliance’, evaluated Ghosh.
Terming Selina a versatile writer, Dr Anisuzzaman said, ‘Selina Hossain is equally skilled writing different genres of literature like novel, short story and essays.’
‘She is also a prolific editor’, Anisuzzaman said, ‘Her editing of Gender Bishwakosh testifies to her skill as an editor.’
An overwhelmed Selina Hossain thanked all for showing love and affection to her. ‘I have never celebrated my birthday in such a way. I am very grateful to all of you for your love and kindness’, she said.
Earlier, Bangladesh Shishu Academy artistes presented two colourful dance recitals synchronised with Tagore song Pagla Hawar badal Diney and folk song Gange Naimachhe Bao.
Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra singer Bulbul Mahalanbish rendered popular Tagore song Edin Aji Kon Ghare as her tribute to the writer.
