A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered Police Bureau of Investigation to probe two cases lodged with the court against 10 cops including officers-in-charge of Badda and Bhatara police stations in the capital for extortion and snatching.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate M Mazharul Islam passed the order after recording depositions of the plaintiffs in the cases.
One of the cases was lodged by Nurunnahar Nasima Begum, a resident of Badda, naming Badda OC, six police members of the station, four individuals and five to seven unnamed people for extortion and vandalising her house.
The other case was lodged by a businessman, Momtaz Uddin Khan, naming Bhatara Police Station OC and two sub-inspectors for snatching gold and cash money from his house.
In her case, Nurunnahar alleged that she had a long dispute over the ownership of a piece of land with Jahanara Rashid Rupa, daughter of her husband’s another wife.
Both Nurunnahar and Rupa used to live at the same house at Badda along with their respective family members.
On Saturday, Rupa along with her husband Ataur Rahman Kaysar, two others — Rokeya Rashid and electrician M Shukur Ali — and the police team comprising sub-inspector Shahid, assistant sub-inspectors Din Islam and M Abdur Rahim and three constables, went to her Badda apartment in her absence, she alleged.
She alleged that Rupa asked her son Robin to reset the electric connection to her apartment.
As Robin declined to do so, the policemen beat him up with hammer, left him injured, vandalised the electric meter, furniture and took away Tk 20,000 in cash and five bhories of gold ornaments from the apartment, she complained.
She alleged that ASI Abdur Rahim on May 26 threatened her and told her to give Tk 2 lakh to OC Abdul Jalil.
In his case, businessman Momtaz Uddin Khan alleged that the Bhatara police station OC and sub-inspectors Babul and Maruf on September 4, 2015 entered his house and snatched 25 bhoris of gold and Tk 3 lack in cash.
