Members of Rapid Action Battalion on Wednesday claimed to have arrested three suspected members of banned extremist outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh and seized arms, ammunitions and explosives during raids in four villages under Gomastapur and Nachol upazilas in Chapainawabganj.
During the seven-hour drives that ended around 11:15am, RAB seized three kilograms of gunpowder, four firearms, 13 rounds of bullets, three magazines and a toy pistol, RAB officials said.
Lieutenant Colonel Mahbub Alam, commanding officer of RAB-5, said that the battalion members, on information, arrested three suspected JMB activists in Gomastapur Bazarpara area around 4:00am.
The arrested were Jahangir Alam, 43, of village Rajarampur, Abdus Shukur alias Shukuruddi, 32, of village Balugram Shimultala, and Saiful Alam, 43, of village Chakpustam under Gomastapur upazila.
Based on their information, the battalion members had cordoned off the house of Abdul Majid at Chanpara, Afzal Hossain’s house at village Alisapur under Nachol, Ejabul Haque’s house at Chakpustam and Shukuruddin’s house at Balugram Shimultala under Gomastapur, the CO said.
The RAB officer claimed that Shukur was a trainer of JMB and was an absconding accused in the case of killing Nachol’s Salman who was killed in JMB internal feud in 2012.
Shukur’s father Mofiz Uddin alleged that his son had been picked up from his house 15 days ago by a group of men who identified themselves as members of a law-enforcing agency.
