A upazila administration staff was found dead in custody of Jaintapur police station in Sylhet Friday morning, a few hours after he was arrested in connection with a torture case.
Deceased Nazrul Islam Babu, 32, was a Class IV employee of Jaintapur Upazila Administration office.
Babu ripped off a blanket kept at the cell and hung himself with the piece of cloth from the ceiling at about 4:45am, said Sylhet district police additional superintendent Sugyan Chakma.
‘The attempt was recorded in the close-circuit camera of the police station,’ the police officer said, adding that steps would be taken against the police personnel, who were on duty at that time, for negligence in discharging their duty properly.
Jaintapur police officer-in-charge Safiul Kabir said Babu was charged in a case filed by her wife under the Woman Repression (prevention) Act and he was arrested at around 1:30am from Hajji Villa at Bateshwar area in the district.
‘Victim’s body was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for post‑mortem examination,’ the police officer said.
Victim’s relatives, however, complained that the police set him up and, in fact, they tortured him to death.
Talking to reporters, Babu’s brother-in-law Lulfur Miah alleged that the police tortured Babu to death and then fabricated the story of his suicide to hide the actual reason behind the death.
