One killed in ‘gunfight’

A man in his thirties was shot and killed during a reported gunfight with police at Duttapara area in Lakshmipur sadar, claimed police.
Deceased Mohammad Russel was a resident of Choyani Takba village under Chatkhil upazila of Noakhali, police confirmed.
He was wanted in at least 20 cases lodged with the Sadar and Chandraganj police stations in Lakshmipur and the Chatkhil police station in Noakhali, said Chandraganj police station officer-in-charge Mokhtar Hossain.
He claimed that they arrested Russel with a gun, two bullets and 11 pieces of contraband Yaba pills from an abandoned house at Uttar Joypur area under Sadar upazila on Thursday.
Acting on Russel’s information, police, along with Russel, conducted a drive at Duttapara to recover illegal arms and ammunitions at about 2:00am, the OC added.
Sensing the presence of police, Russel’s associates opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gunfight, he claimed.
At one stage, Russel was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, while Russel’s cohorts managed to flee the scene.
Three policemen were injured during the operation, and a gun, one pistol and nine bullets were recovered from the spot, the police officer said.
He said the body was sent to Lakshmipur General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
