‘Robber’ killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Gangni upazila in Meherpur early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Lalon, 30, son of Jahirul Islam, of Joraghat village in the upazila.
Gangni police station acting officer-in-charge Anowar Hossain said acting on a tip-off that a group of robbers were preparing for robbery, a team of patrol police conducted a drive in Chokhtola area on Kushtia-Meherpur highway around 3:00am.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on them prompting police to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, he said.
Lalon received bullet injury during the gunfight while his associates managed to flee the spot, the OC said.
Police took him to Gangni Upazila Health Complex where on duty physicians declared him dead, he added.
Three police officials, including sub-inspector Bokhtiar Khaled, injured during the gunfight, the police official claimed.
Police recovered two bombs, a locally made gun, a bullet, and some sharp weapons from the spot, the OC added.
