Md Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, the incumbent first vice-president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, on Tuesday was elected uncontested the president of the country’s apex trade body for the next 2017-19 term.
The elections of the FBCCI office bearers — president, first vice-president and vice-president — were held Tuesday evening when all the three were elected unopposed in accordance with government wishes, said FBCCI directors.
Mohiuddin, also the managing director of Onus Group, joined the FBCCI board as a nominated director from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
In the elections, Sheikh Fazle Fahim, son of influential Awami League leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and nephew of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was elected first vice-president from the Gopalganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Md Muntakim Ashraf elected vice-president from the Bangladesh Cold Storage Association.
Both the vice-presidents were elected unopposed as their opponents withdrew their nomination papers through negotiations, FBCCI leaders said.
According to a source, along with Fazle Fahim, the newly elected director from the Feni Chamber of Commerce and Industry AKM Shaheed Reza had submitted nomination paper for the first vice-president post but Shaheed later withdrew his nomination paper.
Six nomination papers were submitted for the vice-president post and five of them were withdrawn in support of Muntakim Ashraf.
Earlier, the elections for the director posts of the FBCCI were held on May 14 and Mohiuddin-led panel won 32 of the 36 position of directors from association and chamber groups.
Thirty-six elected directors along with 24 nominated directors (12 from the chamber group and 12 from the association group) on Tuesday elected president and vice-presidents of the country’s apex trade body for the next two-year tenure.
