A man was killed and 25 others injured in a clash between landless farmers and land grabbers at Char Abupur of Hizla upazila Friday morning over occupying land that the government distributed among the landless people of the area.
The deceased was identified as Moslem Sarder, 70, of the area.
Masuduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Hizla police station, said that the government allotted 1.5 acres of land at Char Abupur of Harinathpur union to each landless farmer of the area.
But there was a long standing dispute over the allotted land as one Sohrab Sikder, Hannan Bepari, Salam Munshi, Motahar Bepari, Khaled Mridha and several other people of the area claimed that as their ancestral property.
Following the dispute, around 300 lathials (stick-fighter) of Sohrab Sikder went to the char around 9:00am to occupy the land and crops.
The lathials attacked the landless farmers leaving 25 farmers injured. They also vandalised and torched 20/25 houses of the farmers and looted around 25 cattle.
Later, the injured were rushed to Muladi Health Complex.
Injured Moslem Sardar was shifted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. He succumbed to his injuries here.
On information, police went to the char and brought the situation under control, OC Masuduzzaman added.
He further said police arrested three men in connection with the incident.
