A farmer was injured as miscreants assaulted him in Sunamganj Thursday evening allegedly for protesting at irregularity in distribution of VGF cards among the ultra-poor farmers affected by flash flood this year.
The injured, Fayez Uddin, 55, of village Chandipur at Derai Municipality in the district, was sent to Sylhet Osmmani Medical College Hospital, locals said.
They said that some 20 people, including Fayez, filed a written complaint with the Derai upazila nirbahi officer Thursday afternoon protesting at giving the vulnerable group feeding cards to some people of other professions instead of the farmers affected in the flash flood.
Around 10 people, loyal to Derai municipality mayor Mosharraf Miah, attacked Fayez at the Derai Bazar in the evening when he was returning home after filing the complaint with the UNO, leaving him seriously injured, local traders said.
Mohammad Miadhan, councillor of the ward 1 of the municipality, confirming the news of the attack on Fayez, said local businesspeople sent him to SOMCH.
He alleged that the municipal mayor Mosharraf Miah included some of his people on the list made for the distribution of VGF cards dropping names of affected farmers.
Mosharraf, also joint general secretary of the upazila unit ruling Awami League, however, rejected the allegation of any irregularity in making the list.
‘The incident of attack on Fayez was over previous enmity with some people in the locality,’ Mosharraf claimed.
When contacted, Derai upazila nirbahi officer Tawhiduzzaman acknowledged receiving the written complaint of nepotism in making the VGF list.
‘We are looking into it and necessary step would be taken if the allegation was proved true,’ the UNO said.
