A citizens’ condolence rally at Naniyarchar of Rangamati on Tuesday demanded proper investigation into the custodial death of Romel Chakma, a Rangamati-based leader of Pahari Chhatra Parishad.
Speakers at the rally called for initiating judicial inquiry committee, immediate identification of those who tortured Romel in military custody and ensuring punishment to them.
They also demanded compensating the family of Romel, withdrawing military from the hills and stopping arbitrary arrest of hill people and torturing them.
Presided over by former upazila chairman of Naniyarchar Preetimay Chakma, the rally was also addressed by former union council chairman Sushil Jiban Chakma, Naniyarchar union council chairman Jyotilal Chakma, United People’s Democratic Front’s Khagrachari unit organiser Michael Chakma, Pahari Chhatra Parishad general secretary Anil Chakma, Hill Women’s Federation general secretary Monty Chakma, Parbatya Chattagram Nari Sangha general secretary Kajali Tripura and karbari of Ramhari para Shantana Chakma.
Speakers at the rally held at Patachari school ground alleged the administration particularly the military had created obstruction to hill people to attend the rally. The military had sent many people back to home when they were heading for the rally, they alleged.
A one-minute silence was observed in memory of Romel.
Romel was picked up military on April 5. He was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital after his health condition deteriorated in custody. He died there on April 19.
