Defending champions Abahani Limited kept their winning run in the Dhaka Premier League as they beat Brothers Union by 32 runs in a high-scoring match at Fatullah on Thursday.
Indian batsman Uday Kaul made 94 and four other four batsmen contributed with each scoring over 40 that took Abahani to 327-6 before their bowlers restricted the opponents to 295-8 despite a ton of Junaed Siddique.
Junaed, who made 87 in the previous match, scored a sublime 114 off just 112 but it was not enough as Abahani rode on Shuvagata Hom’s all-round show to eke out their third win on the trot.
Shuvagata, who took the new ball in one end, was the pick of the bowlers with 3-45 bowling 10 overs of off-spin bowling after scoring a whirlwind 44 off just 17 with the bat.
Uday and his opening partner Liton Das gave Abahani a perfect start as they made a 96-run opening stand in 17.1 overs after their skipper Mahmudullah decided to bat first.
Liton was adjudged leg before off Alok Kapali for 48 off 49 but Uday got another good partner in Nazmul Hossain, who made 49 off 56 in their 88-run second wicket stand.
Uday, who struck five boundaries in his 120-ball innings, was caught by substitute Mohammad Saddam off Kazi Kamrul Islam to get back to the pavilion with six short of a century but Abahani was well poised on 229-3 at the end of 41st over for a late surge.
Mosaddek Hossain and Mohammad Mithun made just three and 19 respectively but Mahmudullah and Shuvagata made a blistering 52-run sixth wicket stand off just 23 balls.
Mahmuduhullah, who made half centuries in first two matches, remained not out on 49 off 42.
Kamrul and Kapali got two wickets each for Brothers.
In reply, Brothers’ opener Ruman Ahmed was dismissed for just one but Junaed added 86 with Mizanur Rahman before Shuvagata gave his side the crucial breakthrough by removing the latter for 42.
Farhad Hossain and Myshukur Rahman made 26 and 28 to keep supporting Juaned’s endeavour of a tough chase but skipper Kapali made just six and Taposh Ghosh got out for a golden duck to leave the side on 211-6 in 39th over.
Brothers’ last hope was dashed with Mohammad Saifuddin trapping Junaed, who struck eight fours and three sixes, in front and though Nihaduzzaman remained not out on 41 off just 32 it could just reduce the losing margin.
